FAA Games in Progress
In a battle for the title of Continental Champion, 9 African countries and five visiting countries are participating at Ain Sokhna, near Cairo, in the 8th Federation of African Archery (FAA) Championships.  Even strong desert winds could not dampen the enthusiasm and excitement that surrounded the games as the eliminations progressed yesterday.  Excitement was high when a single arrow shoot-out determined the winner in the Recurve Women’s category between Morocco and Egypt, with Morocco going through.
The tournament continues today with the medal matches (team and individual) and closing with an informal mixed-team event.
South Africa is in the running for two gold medals.  Riaan Crowther will compete for Gold against Namibia (CM) and Jorina Coetzee against Namibia (CW) at 10h00 SA time.  Visit the gallery.  The results to date:

Eastern Province Archery Championships Hits the Spot
Annetjie Van Wynegaard of Grocotts Mail reports that the annual Eastern Province archery championships took place on the Rhodes University Great Field on  Sunday.
The competition was hosted by the Rhodes Archery Club and took the form of a Fita 720 round. The Federation Internationale de Tir a l’Arc /International Archery Federation (Fita) governs the sport.
The archers shot 72 arrows each; with six arrows a turn after which elimination rounds took place according to ranking.  The competitors with the highest and the lowest score competed first in the bronze medal match. The winners of the bronze match went on to the gold medal match and the winners of the gold medal match received a gold medal with the runner-up receiving a silver medal.  This was the first Fita 720 form of the competition in a long time, said Mike Wish, Rhodes archery club captain and competitor.
The reason for this is that 720 rounds are a requirement at certain international events this year. This year is a  Commonwealth Games year so 720-rounds are held to prepare South African archers to represent South Africa internationally.
