Another feather in Mary's Cap : WP to see a new judge on the line soon
The Western Province is about to see a new judge candidate on the line. Mary van Wyk (RW) started archery in the UK in 2003, joining her husband on the line. She quickly realised the challenge and fun of the sport and particularly enjoyed the social aspects of shooting. Mary Obtained her ‘bowman’ status and shot for the county (Middlesex) both indoors and outdoors while also taking on Cranford Archery Club secretary and child protection officer posts. Mary earned 6-gold-end status, several FITA stars as well as roses (imperial equivalent of stars). At an archery improvement course at Lilleshall National Sports Centre, she became more interested in the coaching aspects of the sport, leading up to a level 2 archery coaching course and working with the youth. In 2008, Mary and her husband emigrated back to SA and joined the Belville Archery Club. "I am looking into a way back into the sport which does not require hours of practise! I am hoping that judging will allow me this opportunity and will be another feather in my archery cap!"
SA public get to decide on Olympic Games gear for opening ceremonies
Following the successful voting of Chukuru as Team South Africa’s mascot for the 2012 Olympics and Paralymic Games and beyond, the nation has now been invited to help choose the official kit that South Africa will proudly wear at the Opening Ceremony for this year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games in London. South Africa’s Olympic governing body SASCOC sent out a tender to the top fashion designers around the country for proposals to design the kit. Criteria for the creation of the designs were that the outfits must be proudly South African, for males and females (two separate garments if required), as well as being comfortable.
Rhino mascot : Highlighting the plight of real rhinos
SASCOC News: The South African public voted Chukuru as their favourite in the mascot race. The name chukuru is a Southern African word for rhinoceros, in the Setswana language. The Sascoc mascot features the five colours of the Olympic rings around its horn, but fittingly these are also the colours of the South African flag. The cheerful animal was designed by the Johannesburg-based Mortimer Harvey advertising agency, and saw off competition from over 100 entries to make it to the final six and then claim top spot, winning by a margin of 233 over its closest rival.
National Lottery Board calls for input from Provinces & Clubs
The National Lotteries Board (NLB) invites stakeholders to make contributions that will assist in identifying funding priorities areas in line with the July 2010 Government Regulations and other related legislation. All clubs and provincial archery associations are invited to be part of this initiative. Input from stakeholders involved in the fields of Sport & Recreation will assist in the prioritisation of areas of funding for the 2012 call for applications. It is hoped that a maximum of five priority areas for funding in each sector will be identified.

Pointy Ambitions : Pupils at Bryanston High School learn a thing or two about archery
Keba Mothogae reports: In a bid to find future Olympians, SANAA has begin a campaign to increase awareness of the sport. Representatives of SANAA made an appearance at Bryanston high school to give pupils a taste of what the sport entails with demonstrations and practice. "Archery is not a very visible sport", said SANAA's Leanda Hendricks. "We are aiming at introducing it to the mainstream participants and audience, hopefully finding potential archers who can represent South Africa at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil". Hendricks, the countries archery representative at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, said the sport was not expensive initially as those keen to take part could join a club where the instruments were provided. "Obviously the more one progresses the more they have to get their own material and rely on sponsorship. Archery will be enjoyed by those who are not into team sport as it is highly individualistic and requires complete dedication. Most importantly, it is not that difficult to master," added Hendricks.

Trials to select the team that will be representing South Africa at the Archery World Cup were run this weekend at the Mpumulanga Provincial Championships. Gabriel Badenhorst (691), Petrus Marx (688), Riaan Crowther (684 43/17) and Patrick Roux 684 (40/19). The final points after the round robin was Gabriel Badenhorst 8, Petrus Marx 7, Patrick Roux 3.5 and Riaan Crowther 3.
